Shown below is one of the new features, the option to specify overtime rules when creating a pick-up (Exhibition) game. If you use regular season rules, then overtime goes only one period – it can end in a tie – and is sudden-death.
However, the new overtime rules for playoffs are more involved than in the past. As before, there can be no tie, so the overtime period can extend multiple quarters.
However, the biggest change involves sudden-death. If the receiving team actually receives the kickoff (i.e. the kicking team doesn’t get the ball on the kickoff) and drives down on the opening kickoff and kicks a fieldgoal, then the original kicking team now has one chance to win or tie the game. If that team kicks a fieldgoal, the game goes to sudden-death. If that team scores a touchdown, they win. If they don’t score at all, they lose.
Any initial score other than a fieldgoal results in a win, and if the original receiving team doesn’t score on the initial drive, the game immediately switches to sudden-death.
